North Light Restoration, Block Island, RI

Walter Sedovic Architects

Restoration of the 1867 cast iron light tower was challenged by extensive rust damage due to years of deferred maintenance. The original structure consisted of cast pieces bolted together. Pieces suffering from extensive rust were recast at a foundry, some by melting and reusing the original material. Prior repairs to the iron assembly that were inappropriate were reversed. The top of the tower was lifted off by crane for repairs off island. Structural repairs included work to the timber framing.
