Joan Mitchell Center, New Orleans, LA

Lee Ledbetter Architects

The abstract impressionist artist supported young artists and her foundation continued her mission after her death in 1992. The Artist-in-Residence program supports contemporary visual artists on a campus sited in the Faubourg Treme residential neighborhood of New Orleans. The collaborative studio building expands the facilities for this program. Vierendeel trusses support a broad north facing clerestory in each studio. Vertical terra cotta fins are hung from the front façade. The structural frame consists of Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) walls and roof, glued laminated beams, engineered lumber, light gage steel, and structural steel all founded on 50 foot timber piles.
