D-17, Rice University Art Gallery, Houston, Texas

Artist Sarah Oppenheimer

The 60 foot long structure hovers just above the inner gallery floor before rising steadily on a path along which it seems to pass through a glass wall before piercing the exterior brick wall of the gallery and emerging on the outside. CNC milled aluminum panels are adhered to CNC cut plywood ribs that are bolted to aluminum tube spines. A CNC cut aluminum rib is hung from concealed rods on each side of the glass wall to support the spine ends. Jugs of water to predeflect the spine to its final geometry were removed incrementally as the ribs/skin installation progressed.
